Le nom est originaire du sud de l'Italie (sans doute la province de Potenza, dans la Basilicate). Il est formé de "frate" (= frère, sens familial ou religieux) et du prénom Antuono, variante d'Antonio (= Antoine). On trouve la forme équivalente Fratantonio en Sicile (Raguse, Syracuse). Avec un autre prénom : Fratangelo (province de Campobasso) et sa variante Fratangello.
